Main office at the Middlebury, Indiana KOA
Middlebury and Shipshewana, Indiana... is Amish country. Shipshewana is a major attraction in the mid-west, and in fact, is known nationally as one of the largest flea markets in the country. Over 1,000 vendors and 30,000 people typically turn out on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (the only two days of the week that the flea market is held). In addition, there is an auction on those two days. Indeed, there are auctions on other days as well, but only for farm-commodity items such as hay and horses.
When you are in the area you will see numerous Amish carriages within the town of Shipshewana, as well as the countryside. The town also has many arts and crafts stores that are not part of the flea market. You can also buy old-fashioned food as well - everything from breads to Dutch cooking. After all, the Amish in this area migrated from the Pennsylvania Dutch Amish. The Middlebury KOA is near enough to Shipshewana that they do offer a shuttle on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Holidays during the summer. This is a very convenient way to get there if you have a motorhome without a toad (tow'ed vehicle). Or if you are like the Amish, just bicycle the 9 or so miles to Shipshewana.
Other area attractions, you are also in the "RV Capitol of the World". If you have a vehicle are the many RV manufacturers in nearby Elkhart, In and surrounding area. Some 40+ RV and equipment manufacturers call Elkhart/South Bend Indiana home, and many have tours during the week. The KOA also offers shuttle service to the RV Hall of Fame if there are enough interested in going. The KOA is close enough to the RV manufacturers that some customers make this the first stop when picking up their RV, or stay here when having warranty work done.
The KOA is more or less built on a hillside, with the only level spots near the entrance and the tent area. However, even though the sites are sloping, the RV parking spots are closer to flat - although plan on bringing leveling blocks with you, or your favorite method of leveling. There are both pull through spots with full hook ups as well as back in spots with Electricity and Water only. Be sure to check out their deals though as they sometimes have a 1 night free for 3 nights stayed offer if you can use one of the back in spots.
The heated pool was nice, although there was no hot tub. Other nice amenities include a recreation hall with a '50s style diner that serves ice cream on occasion, fishing pond, bike rentals, paddle boat rentals, and the other typical KOA activities. the KOA is at the corner of two state highways, so it is farily noisy in the daytime, but surprisingly there is not a lot of traffic at night. Firepits are available, but you have to buy the wood at the store - you cannot bring your own wood. Also, mats are not allowed - even the breathable ones.
Getting there. The KOA is on what becomes US-131, just a mile or so from the I80/90 Turnpike in Northern Indiana. So it is an easy drive. Shipshewana is about 9 miles from the KOA on state highways so it too is not bad. However, during the flea market days, the town itself becomes fairly congested. Some commplaints have been reported that GPS Navigation systems cannot find the KOA, but we had no problem withour Garmin RV760LMT finding it.
