One common thread you will find in just about all of our camping recipes is they are cooked in a Dutch Oven. Dutch Ovens are available in many sizes, from 1 quart to 8 quart. Figure about 1/2 to 1 quart per serving and you will be able to determine how large of a Dutch Oven to buy. And my advice - only buy the best... and that means a "Lodge" brand Dutch Oven. Dutch Ovens can be used over the campfire, or for rainy days or when you need to accurately control the heat, they can be used in a conventional oven.
So I suppose these could be called "Dutch Oven" recipes. However, if you don't have a Dutch Oven, don't let it discourage you... however, I highly recommend one for the best results. For example, our Lodge Dutch Oven has indentations in the lid that allow moisture to drip back into the food. This results in very moist cakes and other dishes.
Remember that when you are camping, you are on vacation. All of you. So guys, give your wife a break and you do the cooking on your next camping trip.
In a bowl, mix the ground beef, taco mix, onion, bread, Mrs Dash, and eggs together. When mixed, form a loaf and put in the bottom of a Dutch Oven. Then make a glaze out of mustard, catsup, and brown sugar. Finally, cover with Cheddar Cheese and bake for 30minutes at 350 deg, or put on a campfire and monitor until done.
Garnish with additional cheese or catsup if you wish, or even lettuce or sour cream. Makes 4 servings.
